Textiles

The textile collection covers a period stretching from the 18th century until today. As well as domestic adornments, it includes a sizeable group of ecclesiastical vestments from Lisbon churches, such as Saint Anthony and Saint Lawrence.

The tapestry section merits special mention, with pieces mostly produced during the 1980s and '90s by Portalegre Tapestries Manufacture, based on cartoons by renowned Portuguese artists. Bearing witness to the city’s history, several standards illustrate the development of Lisbon’s coat of arms, while other pieces, such as flags or pennants, evoke significant events that have taken place in the city, such as the visit of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom in 1957, and Expo ‘98.
