Sovereignty, safety and food sustainability of cities. Lisbon's Vegetable Gardens. From the Middle Ages to the 21st century exhibition was born out of the reflection on these three ideas, and opened on 22 October, at the Museum of Lisbon.

Between historical and contemporary perspectives, we go back to medieval times to discover vegetable gardens in the heart of the city (Praça da Figueira, Rossio, Martim Moniz). But we also look to the future through the latest techniques at our disposal to build and maintain an urban, resilient and sustainable garden.

An ethnographic research carried out by the Museum of Lisbon brings us the diversity of gardens in the city, revealing senses of belonging, practices, narratives and mutual help networks that reflect different origins and migratory paths.

The way in which the horticultural practice has been appropriating public spaces and the challenges facing the food supply of large cities are also subjects addressed in this exhibition, produced by the Museum of Lisbon in partnership with the Lisbon City Council.

A seed “library” shared by some of the guardians of the existing biodiversity in the municipal horticultural parks of Lisbon closes the exhibition.

The Museum of Lisbon created a blog associated with this exhibition, a space for sharing content and experiences for all those who, in different ways, are interested in this topic. Participate!
