The popular marches are an event which features folklore groups that represent the ways of life in the respective neighbourhoods of the Portuguese capital. Disseminated by traditional media over time, today, with the presence of and interaction with online social media, smartphones and tablets in their daily social and communication practices, these groups have the opportunity to produce and manage their media presence from their own perspective.

In this conference, Élmano Ricarte, a researcher at NOVA's Institute of Communication, will present his recent work which analyses the relationship between Lisbon's Popular Marches and the media, particularly social media, as well as smartphones and tablets. Seeking to understand the relationship between these Lisbon communities and the media, this event aims to promote a reflection, from a Communication Sciences perspective, on the spheres of Media and Popular Culture.
