Cloister of the Lisbon Cathedral – public spaces in different cities

Excavations in the cloister of Lisbon's cathedral, which began in 1990, have revealed how the various cities that emerged on the hillside of St. George's Castle overlapped.

Public spaces predominate: from the Roman period, with one of the only streets still known from the Roman city; through to the Islamic period, with the recently identified Almoravid mosque complex; and to the construction of the cloister in the late 13th/early 14th century, whose fascinating construction techniques became evident during the archaeological interventions.
