Dating from 1522, The Tears of Maria Parda was the first work commissioned by King João III to Gil Vicente after the funeral ceremonies of King Manuel, who died in December 1521. Gil Vicente delivered a female monologue through a saucy old, mixed-race (swarthy) and sexually free woman who wanders through Lisbon's streets, lamenting the lack of wine in the city's taverns.

This play celebrates Lisbon, its storyline unfolding through various locations close to the Roman Theatre in the historical part of the city. It is also a tribute to Portuguese theatre and one of its greatest exponents, Gil Vicente, in the week commemorating World Theatre Day.
