The Museum of Lisbon - Roman Theatre is organising the international congress Roman Temples in Lusitania, from 13 to 15 March 2025.
Bringing together more than three dozen researchers, this meeting aims to gather and update information on the more than 20 temples that are currently known in the territory of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania, important buildings in Romanisation, in the union of peoples and in the creation of a peculiar religious syncretism.
The importance of temples is closely related to classical culture, and they also represented a form of domination and propaganda, a powerful mean of conveying the ideals of conquest, empire and imperial worship. The construction of temples throughout the empire highlights the power of religion, but also the role of architecture in asserting power.
Exposing lesser-known research with the non-scientific community is another aim of this congress, opening space for knowledge and information sharing, thus making historical and archaeological knowledge more accessible.
This is the second international congress organised by the Museum of Lisbon - Roman Theatre, whose mission involves the investigation and dissemination of classical heritage. The papers of the first meeting, held in March 2023 and dedicated to the theme of Performance Buildings in Roman Lusitania, will be published in the magazine SCAENA VI, which will be presented during this congress.
The call for posters to be presented during the congress is open until 9 December.
Full programme to be announced soon.
