Since 2022, Lisbon has celebrated Saint Anthony's Washing with a ceremony that includes the symbolic washing of the steps of the Church of Saint Anthony of Lisbon, preceded by a programme that includes different events commemorating peace.
The exhibition Washing: Origins and Lusophony, inaugurated on the occasion of the 2nd edition of Saint Anthony's Washing, reveals the ancestral links between religiosity and spirituality, between Portuguese and Brazilian culture.
Tracing a religious, cultural and social journey that begins in Brazil in the 16th and 17th centuries and continues to the present day, this exhibition explains how a form of worship that originated in Bahia (Brazil) in 1745 has survived and transformed to the present day, becoming a ritual celebrated in both Paris (France) and Lisbon.
