Saint Anthony freeing his father from the gallows
Among the miracles performed by Saint Anthony (which are the basis of his great popularity) is that which recounts the saint saving his own father, unjustly accused of having murdered another man, from the gallows. Despite being in Italy, the gift of bilocation allowed the saint to quickly travel to Lisbon, where he resurrected the dead man who personally had the accused acquitted.
This painting dates from the second half of the 16th century. Despite the shortcomings of its perspective, which gave it a secondary status in the Portuguese art world of the time, it illustrates the great devotion for Saint Anthony in Lisbon in the period
