Tobacco jar
This piece was produced in the 1820s, long before the abolition of slavery, and depicts a stereotypical image of the African women who played a part in everyday life in Lisbon. Many of these women were assigned duties in different families, either caring for children or chaperoning women.
This exotic ceramic piece has a lid, suggesting that it was designed as a tobacco jar. Tobacco was cultivated in Brazil by African slaves.
