Reckoning with the legacy of slavery in museums and social memory

Lonnie G. Bunch III, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, will be in Lisbon in January to hold a conference and participate in a symposium, within the scope of the program «Confronting the legacy of slavery in museums and in social memory».

Bunch will be at Culturgest, on January 7, 2023, for a conference dedicated to the theme «Racism in the public square: the role of museums in difficult but necessary conversations» followed, on January 9th, by a symposium with the theme Settling accounts with racism: the social memory of the slave trade, which will take place at MUHNAC-ULisboa.

Both events are presented in collaboration with the Museu de História Natural e da Ciência da Universidade de Lisboa, the Museum of Lisbon, Culturgest, Acesso CulturaBatoto Yetu Portugal and the Slave Wrecks Project, an international network hosted by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.

With simultaneous translation, both events are free of charge, but the symposium requires prior registration through this ​​​​​link.
