13 December, 1521. On the 500th Anniversary of the Death of King Manuel I

On 13 December 1521, King Manuel I died in his Palace of Ribeira in Lisbon, a victim of the plague that was raging through his kingdom. At 3 o'clock in the morning of the following day, the king's body was transported with great fanfare to the Jerónimos Monastery, the monastic house he had designated as his family pantheon. 

The sovereign's death marked the end of an era of great prosperity in Lisbon, a city that changed forever under his reign.

Historian José Manuel Garcia, from the Olisipo Studies Office and curator of the exhibition Lisbon at the Time of King Manuel I: The City that Longed for the World (currently on show at the Museum of Lisbon - Palácio Pimenta), will address some aspects of the life and death of a king who retains his place in the national imaginary. The talk will be preceded by a visit to the exhibition.
