The fame and success of Joaquim Machado de Castro as author and leader of a specialized team of sculptors, fostered the idea, widely spread in historiography, that he was responsible for a vast set of works, in clay, wood or stone, scattered throughout the country.

Author to whom the most significant part of the sculptural production of the 18th century in Portugal is attributed, recent research has deconstructed this idea, revealing the names of many other masters who, in the light of new data, emerge in the historiographical shadow of Joaquim Machado de Castro.

Sandra Costa Saldanha is assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Coimbra.
